The Norwegian School, MAYA Musikk & Kulturskole opens in New York City! The teaching locations will be at The Norwegian Seamen’s Church located on Manhattan and in Brooklyn.
Maya is looking forward in bringing Norwegian music and culture to New York. She wants to create a school where Norwegian music and culture will be the focus of teaching. The purpose of Maya’s Norwegian School of Performing Arts is to bring knowledge of Norwegian music and culture to 1, 2, and 3 generation Norwegian-Americans and also to the general public of New York. The classes will be given in Norwegian or English, by highly educated Norwegian teachers, living in Norway and in New York. Maya has always felt very strong ties to the United States and the City of New York. After Oslo and Bergen, New York City was once the third largest city of Norwegian population in the world. For over two generations, most of her family worked and lived in Brooklyn, New York. Due to her American background, Maya is both Norwegian and American citizen.
At the age of 18, Maya moved from Lista in Farsund County located in the far south of Norway to Oslo to study to become a musician and music teacher. In 1981, she founded MAYA Musikk & Kulturskole in Oslo, Norway. Over the years, the school has developed to become Norway’s largest private school of music, dance, theater and fine arts.
MAYA’s School of Performing Arts in New York will provide lessons and classes to all ages starting from the age of 2.
